Description

A large and impressive ironclad, called Jackson and Muskogee in Confederate records, the CSS Jackson  was constructed near Columbus, Georgia.  Jackson was nearing completion when Columbus was attacked by Union forces on April, 1864.  Fearing the vessel would fall into enemy hands, the local population took it upon themselves to burn and scuttle the ship.  Jackson's loss to the Confederacy was huge, in that tremdous time, materials, and precious iron was spent building her, and that she was only days from completion.  The Jackson may have well been the most powerful Confederate ironclad constructed, incorporating lessons learned from her predesessors.   The CSS Jackson is fondly known as the LAST Confederate ironclad.
