The outbreak of World War II in 1939 led to the birth of British Lancaster bomber. The elegant looking Lancaster was a mid-wing monoplane with all-metal fuselage and twin vertical stabilizers. There were two Merlin engines mounted under each wing. There were a nose turret, a dorsal turret and a tail turret equipped with 7.7mm machine guns. This bomber could carry a variety of bombs in its huge bomb bay.
The Lancaster entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1940 and soon it became the most powerful bomber of the RAF Bomber Command. It’s also the primary bomber used by Britain in the strategic bombing of Germany during WWII.
