Description

The 1/192 (10.5" long) scale USS Monitor is a moderately easy to construct multi-media kit featuring resin, white metal cast parts, decal flag, photo etch parts, brass and plastic rod, computer illustrated instructions.

The prototype of the turreted Ironclad Monitor class was designed by John Ericsson, famous for its duel with the CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads, was constructed by Continental at Greenpoint, NY, and was launched January 30, 1862.  Commissioned February 25th, 1862, she was assigned to the NABS where she encountered the CSS Virginia in the famous point blank duel at Hampton Roads, VA on March 9th, 1862 sustaining 22 hits.  Monitor met the Virginia again on April 11, 1862, but neither vessel was willing to engage.  She shelled Sewell’s Point, VA on May 8th, 1862 in an attempt to draw out the Virginia but again, neither vessel was willing to engage.  Monitor was refitted at Washington Navy Yard in October, 1862 with a Y-telescoping funnel and rifle shield atop the turret.  Monitor was ordered to attack Fort Caswell at Wilmington in conjunction with Passaic, but sank in a gale off Cape Hatteras, as NC was being towed South by USS Rohde Island.  The Monitor has been recently resurrected from her watery grave and is now on exhibition.
