Description

  • Airbrush Ready – Squadron Scale Colors are ready for your airbrush directly out of the bottle. Please use Less than 20 psi for best results.

  • Thinning – Not everyone sprays at the same pressure. You may prefer to spray at a much lower PSI in multiple, wet coats, which is often required for advanced painting techniques such as pre- and post-shading. In this case, please use Scale Colors Thinner, Water, IPA (isopropyl alcohol) or a combination of the three. Do NOT use other proprietary thinners (such as Tamiya), lacquer thinners, enamel thinners, or other such thinners. Doing so will over-cure the paint and turn it into a messy paste that will be very difficult to remove from your airbrush.
  • Flow Control Agent – Squadron Scale Colors includes a flow control agent in each bottle and is ready to spray. No additional flow control agent is needed.

  • Brush Painting – Squadron Scale Colors are formulated specifically for spraying with an airbrush. Touch ups and small areas can be brush painted (results vary depending on skill level) but brush-painting an entire model is not recommended.

  • Hazard Warning – Squadron Scale Colors is formulated to be extremely low odor and as safe to use as possible. This is achieved by water and isopropyl alcohol as the primary ingredients by volume. However, we strongly advise users to adhere to all safety practices when spraying any paint. Scale Colors MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheets) are available.

  • Primer - Like any paint, Squadron Scale Colors performs better over primer. However, whether to prime or spray straight to plastic is up to you and your skillset. If you choose to prime we recommend our Squadron Scale Colors Primer, however, you will have success with many other primers as well.

  • Preparation & Application – Squadron Scale Colors is pigment-heavy and will need to be shaken very well before each use. We recommend building up layers in 2~3 light coats allowing for for a few minutes drying time between each coat for best results.

  • Weird Looking in The Bottle - Because the paint is formulated for spraying, the viscosity of the paint is much lower than standard paints (thinner), and as a result, it separates faster. Each bottle has stainless steel bearings, so be sure to shake the bottle well before each use. The bottle may have a separated or marbled appearance, this is normal and will disappear once sufficiently shaken.

  • Initial Versus Final Color – Squadron Scale Colors are matched to be historically accurate. Regardless of how the paint looks in the bottle, please note that as the paint dries the color will darken & change slightly. Once dry, the desired color will be the result. Your choice of clear coat will also have an effect on the final result.

  • Gloss or Flat? Squadron Scale Colors is deliberately formulated to be semi-gloss, allowing the modeler to apply decals, washes, and weathering directly onto the paint without additional layers of clear coats. The paint is intended to be sprayed with Squadron Scale Colors clear coats to achieve desired final result. Flat, Semi-Gloss and Gloss clear coats are available.

  • How long does it take to dry? Squadron Scale Colors paint dries to the touch in less than 15 minutes - however - the paint requires at least 24 hours to chemically cure. If you are masking Scale Colors paint, it is recommended that you wait at least 2 hours before masking.

  • Removing Paint - Use Squadron Scale Colors Thinner or IPA (isopropyl alcohol) to remove paint shortly after spraying. Please note that as the paint cures, it will become harder to remove with this method. Once the paint is completely cured, our new Squadron Scale Colors Paint Stripper can be used to remove paint.
    • Accurate Colors - The Squadron research and development team consists of experts in WWII naval camouflage and historical research. Our archives contain more than 20,000 photos from the period, and thousands of pages of documents pertaining specifically to paint, camouflage, and mixing. We utilize a variety of historic color standards, such as the 1929 Munsell Book of Color, US Federal Standard series 595, 595A, 595B, and 595C, and German RAL gGmbH. We do in-house photo-spectrometry for computerized color matching for Meuthen, Munsell, RAL, and CieLab color standards. This same methodology used for our naval colors has been expanded into aircraft, military vehicles and other areas where historical accuracy is paramount.
    • Shelf Life? – Squadron Scale Colors (formerly just Scale Colors), has been in production for eight years, and we’ve been using many colors in-house that have been around since the very beginning. Shaking the bottles on a regular basis, not letting them freeze and cleaning the bottle lip will ensure an extended shelf life.
